Kool & The Gang's Beloved Hype Man "Chicago Mike" Sumler Killed in Georgia Crash

Affectionately referred to as "Chicago Mike," Sumler wasn't just a singer and guitarist but a force. From his early role as stylist and choreographer in 1985 to the band's unofficial hype man, Sumler was the fiery energy that ignited the stage with each performance. With sizzling moves, he showcased a flamboyant flair and boundless energy that made it clear Mike wasn't just making Kool & The Gang look better; he was making them feel better. And the crowds thought it, too.

Officials said the crash occurred shortly after midnight on Veterans Memorial Highway near Buckner Road. The other car hit Sumler's vehicle head-on. The other driver, thankfully, was not injured, and Sumler was pronounced dead at the scene. The heartbreaking news of his death came hours after he took the stage at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre for An Evening of Funk, including shows from Midnight Star, Con Funk Shun, and Rose Royce.

With two Grammys, seven American Music Awards, and over 30 gold and platinum records, their influence is profound, and Sumler was a part of that magic.

Michael Sumler was not only part of Kool & The Gang's story but was also part of funk history. The twinkle in his step, the wear in his soul, and the joy that he brought to so many shows will be missed but never forgotten.
