Sura Laynes captures nostalgia and romance with "Smalltown Love Song"

In a time when so much of music feels over-processed and diluted, Sura Laynes offers something raw and honest. Adequately heartfelt in their new single, "Smalltown Love Song,"  Soothing and slinky, this track pulls from the band's self-titled debut record, taking a turn away from its energetic moments and offering a gentle, quieter side.

"Smalltown Love Song" begins softly with a propulsive acoustic guitar, providing a sturdy foundation for J. J Marriott's shimmering lead, which glistens like rain over Walsh's starry-eyed vocal line. This dreamy approach contrasts the band's previous singles while adding depth to what has quickly proven to be Sura Laynes' musical character, that of a band in no way one-dimensional.

"Smalltown Love Song" reads like poetry in motion, describing a love discovered in an unlikely place, a town with the accelerative effort but not much gold, where time runs slow, but beauty is built into every cobblestone and in every silent space. Pounding against the wall of noise, Paul Harrison's drumming skillfully makes space for the song to breathe, incrementally building toward a cathartic soft howl in the chorus. Pablo Whittington's bass and harmonies fill it with depth, leading to the ghostly final line.
