The Southern Residents pay tribute with "Devyn Gale"

Canadian folk outfit The Southern Residents have just released their debut single, "Devyn Gale," a stirring ballad laced with bluegrass influences that pays tribute to the bravery of Wildland Firefighters. A moving tribute draped in dusky harmonies and expert instrumentation, "Devyn Gale" is essential listening for fans of folk and bluegrass alike.

The collaboration of Tom Taylor and Adrian Dolan, two veteran musicians with strong connections to Canada's folk music scene, is at the core of Folk Signals. Taylor, a talented songwriter and acoustic guitarist, was a perfect creative match with Dolan, a multi-instrumentalist and veteran hard rock producer. The players included Scott White on bass (The Bills), lush vocal harmonies thanks to Jeanne Tolmie (The Luckies), banjo ninja Shanti Bremer (The Sweet Lowdown), and renowned fiddler Daniel Lapp. Completing the lineup, David Hughes (She Stole My Beer, The Radio Grande) adds interactions with Dobro to flesh out the band's complex sound.

"Devyn Gale." The lyrics pay tribute to the tragic loss of Devyn Gale, the firefighter who died fighting a fire outside Revelstoke, BC, in July 2023. Inspired by her story, Taylor tried to immortalize her sacrifice and tell it in song. Devyn deserves a folk song that honors her bravery but also speaks to the increasingly dangerous terrain these firefighters encounter as wildfires become more common.
