Rapper and YouTube personality DDG is raising eyebrows with his new song "Don't Take My Son," which pokes fun at his ex-R&B star and actress Halle Bailey. The emotional song, counting down the days since their split, but glimpsed online, expresses his frustrations, asserting Bailey is restricting his time with their one-year-old son, Halo.
After DDG decided to air out his grievances with Bailey this past weekend during his life, the drama unfolded as he then took to the Internet to vent about how he believed he had been denied visitation rights. Latched out from Livestream to lyrics, the Michigan rapper pulled no punches in his new song. One of the most evocative lines of the song, "Don't take my son 'cause he's all I got," lays bare the raw pain that he says he's feeling in their continuing co-parenting conflict.
Along with the song, DDG doubled down on his grievances in a YouTube video called "She Won't Let Me See My Son." He alleged that he is only permitted 72 hours with Halo at once and accused Bailey of preventing him from visiting their child for months.
"I feel like I'm getting bullied," DDG said. "I keep hearing secondary parent, not primary parent. I got to see him, but it's very minimal time."
The rapper also recounted an alleged incident in which he was removed from Bailey's home during a visit, saying it was not the first time he had been thrown out. Even with all the challenges working together as co-parents have presented, DDG says he's hesitant to drag things to court, saying doing so would only result in a worse situation than the one they had.
DDG also suggested that he had been hiding his true feelings about the situation for Bailey's public image.
"I have never wanted to say anything that was bad about her. I tried always to protect her golden image," he said. But he alleged that Bailey uses their son to "get under my skin."
Halle Bailey hasn't directly responded to DDG's accusations. Instead, she went on social media with a different message, informing fans that she and Halo had been ill.
"I just wanted to come on here and tell you guys why I'm not posting," Bailey wrote. "Me and Halo are very sick. We do not feel good at all. I'm sorry I haven't posted snaps, but I've just been using all my energy to care for my baby and myself."
DDG's choice to bring his woes to the song has received mixed reviews online. Bailey's fans were largely critical of his decision to publicly air family complications, accusing him of angling for attention. Others questioned the fairness of his predicament, joining in on the argument that fathers should have equal rights for their children.
Regardless of which side people take, one thing is clear. This co-parenting dispute is happening in real-time, involving both stars as they navigate the overlap of personal travails and public perception. TBD is whether they can iron out those differences behind closed doors or if more drama will play out.
