Jake Paul is leaving the boxing ring to enter into a lifetime commitment and is making headlines again, but this time for a much sweeter reason than a knockout. The YouTube star-turned-prize fighter just got engaged to Dutch Olympian Jutta Leerdam, and the internet loves their romantic clip.
Paul announced the news on Instagram on Saturday, sharing photos of the romantic proposal. He’s on one knee in the pics as Leerdam beams excitedly, holding up her sparkling engagement ring.
“We’re engaged,” Paul captioned the post. “We can’t wait to spend eternity together.”
The couple, who have been open about their relationship since they got together publicly, frequently posts updates about their love on social media. But it is their first official step toward saying “I do.”
Leerdam isn’t only the future Mrs. Paul, but she’s also an elite athlete in her own right. The Dutch speed skating star has made headlines in the sporting world, winning a silver medal in the 1000-meter event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
In addition to her Olympic feat, Leerdam has accumulated six European golds in the 1000-meter and sprint disciplines, making her one of the strongest speed skaters in her sport. Now, she’s gliding full speed ahead into her next chapter with Paul.
First discovered as a Disney Channel star, he graduated from YouTube fame and has been making serious moves as a boxer for the past few years. His last fight was a blockbuster match against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The fight, streamed exclusively on Netflix last November, concluded with a unanimous decision in favor of Paul, a payday of a staggering $40 million for Paul, and left him with an official record of 11 wins and just one defeat.
His lone loss was to the British reality TV star and pugilist Tommy Fury, who rose to fame from the reality show “Love Island.” But despite that disappointment, Paul has continued to feel confident in his prospects of taking on some of the biggest names in his sport.
While wedding bells are ringing, Paul isn’t hanging up his boxing gloves just yet. He’s already looking ahead to future matchups and recently acknowledged that he might not be ready to face WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez. But that hasn’t stopped him from targeting heavyweight titan Anthony Joshua.
“I know where I can go,” Paul said. “Here’s the thing, I want to fight Anthony Joshua, because I know that I f**king beat Anthony Joshua’s ass.”
Whether that fight ever happens remains to be seen, but for now, Paul has fought his biggest fight yet, winning himself a lifetime partner in Leerdam. From knockouts by viral contenders to a viral proposal, Jake Paul knows how to keep people talking.
