For decades, JAY-Z has built a legacy as one of Hip-Hop’s most influential players, but in recent weeks, false allegations against him did more than land his name in the tabloids; tore through his family. Now his attorney, Alex Spiro, is opening up about how the false lawsuit upended the Carter household, impacting JAY-Z’s kids and requiring the mogul to take up arms.
In December 2024, a woman agreed to be identified as Jane Doe sued JAY-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs, accusing the two men of assault in connection with incidents that date back to 2000 when she was 13 years old. The allegations rocked the industry and catapulted them into a media firestorm.
But two months later, in February 2025, a judge dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it could not be refiled. JAY-Z had been exonerated, but it was too late.
“It is hard to hear false statements being made about you, circulated online and impacting your children,” Spiro told ABC News. “It’s hard on him, it’s hard on anybody. But what he does is, he clears his name.”
If public figures develop a thick skin regarding hosannas and attacks, it’s different when their families are in the crosshairs. SPIRO: The overall climate created by these allegations presented a direct storm in the face of JAY-Z’s children, Blue Ivy and Rumi, and Sir.
Once accusations go viral online, they are a living, breathing thing that need not have a shred of truth . As a child, can you imagine watching your father’s name be dragged through the mud over something entirely made up?” This was not only an attack on JAY-Z’s career, Spiro argued, but also an incursion in his personal life and role as a father.
JAY-Z didn’t celebrate the dismissal of the lawsuit, but he acted. In March 2025, he sued Jane Doe and her lawyer, Tony Buzbee, for defamation. Doe had accused the Houston-based lawyer, who has represented 120-plus plaintiffs with claims against Diddy, of pushing her to include JAY-Z in the suit for millions, despite knowing he was not involved.
But then an audio recording came to light that turned everything on its head. In the recording, Doe is heard clearly saying that JAY-Z “didn’t have anything to do with any sexual acts” and that she was “pushed” by her legal team to name him in the case. Spiro said the recording was absolute evidence that JAY-Z was innocent.
“The tape speaks for itself,” Spiro said. “She states unequivocally Mr. Carter did not do this. It is really a lie, and the only reason Mr. Carter is even in this case is because she was forced to put him in by a lawyer.”
Spiro said being found innocent wasn’t enough, even with a legal win. JAY-Z’s defamation suit is about accountability for damage inflicted by false accusations.
“The truth had to come out all the way,” Spiro said. “This person cannot be permitted in some sense to evade the reality that this was a false accusation.
For JAY-Z, the stakes of the fight were never just about his name; they were about his family. And in the end, the truth prevailed.
