Rapper Blueface is turning over a new leaf from behind bars. The "Thotianna" artist, famous just as much for his viral brawl as his music, recently apologized to the one person who stuck with him through it all: his mother, Karissa Safford.
Karlissa posted a heartfelt, screenshot-filled post of her son's private message to Instagram. But this was no casual check-in from prison. This was Blueface, without the noise, the fame, the chaos, serving up something raw and honest: regret, reflection, and, most especially, gratitude for being imprisoned. In an emotional missive, he revealed something so painful for a mother to hear: At one point, he thought women in his life loved him more than she did.
"I want to apologize to you for letting any female influence our relationship," Blueface wrote. I figured a few girls might have loved me more than you, but I was wrong."
The rapper noted that his time away has "shown him who's riding" and just "riding. "I'm grateful I went to prison because while I was gone, I could take a look from afar and view them taking advantage of my downtime as a headstart."
For his mother, this day was already emotionally charged, but it was also the birthday of Blueface's brother, who is currently serving time behind bars. Karlissa said she was saddened, as this was the first time that both her sons were locked up on this day.
"He knew today would be ruff on me because every year he was in jail, we celebrated his brother's birthday, and today they are both in jail," she wrote in the caption of her post. "I'll put some cake back for both of y'all because I know God got y'all. My son @bluefasebabyy, this means the world to me. Today is bittersweet."
This kind of vulnerability from Blueface, who often makes headlines for drama and controversy, is rare. But perhaps prison is indeed making him consider the interior. Whether he'll manage to stick to this growth after becoming a free man is anyone's guess. Still, for the moment, it is a reminder that a person is trying to figure it out behind each headline and viral video, one difficult lesson at a time.
