CeeLo Hints New Gnarls Barkley Album Is Coming 'Soon'

In classic CeeLo style, the Goodie Mob vet and musical chameleon left an intoxicating teaser that already gives fans plenty to discuss. He shared a mysterious, conceptual image of himself alongside the producer Danger Mouse on his Instagram page, captioned: "#run Gnarls Barkley album is going to happen #first."

For longtime fans of the whimsical pair who captured ears in 2006 with the genre-shaking smash "Crazy," this quiet yet seismic post comes across as the first drop of rain before an ensuing full-blown storm. Their debut album, 'St. Elsewhere,' gave them an international anthem, Grammy nominations, and platinum plaques. The follow-up, "The Odd Couple" (2008), was perhaps their last officially released album until now.

And as far back as February 2024, CeeLo also confirmed that Gnarls Barkley's long-awaited third album was almost there. "Just let the people know that the new Gnarls Barkley is coming," he declared with characteristic bravado. "We are much closer to getting it done than we were" last year. We are a quantum leap closer. Let 'em know."

Of course, music-making across state lines brings yet another layer of complexity. With CeeLo based in Fayette County, Ga., and Danger Mouse holding it down in New York City, the duo has adapted to a 21st-century approach, sharing sessions via remote access or popping in and out of each other's studios whenever possible. No tour buses or late-night jams are necessary; just two futurologists build bridges over bandwidth.

And even though there is neither a tracklist, release date, nor any official press rollout, fans are clinging onto every pixel of that Instagram post like it's a lifebuoy. After all, in the era of surprise albums and blink-and-you'll-miss-it drops, "soon" could mean anything from "next week" to "tonight at midnight."

If the energy behind that teaser indicates what's to come, the duo's return will be a release as unexpected and genre-bending as their debut. Clear some space on those devices and be on the lookout. Gnarls Barkley may be in the mood to make us feel a little "crazy" again.
