Lil Wayne, the rapping legend, is finally sharing his side of the viral image with ex-commander-in-chief Donald Trump from 2020. And He does not care what anyone thinks.
The snapshot set off a digital firestorm two days before the 2020 presidential election. Critics on social media came out swinging, assuming Wayne had suddenly endorsed Trump. But, in the man's words, it wasn't that deep.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, 42 Wayne finally restated the rumors. The picture wasn't his idea. "There were some people in there like, 'Y'all should take a picture,'" he said. He didn't even want a picture.
Trump was trying to escape the chaos of the day. “‘These m############ is asking me for f###### pictures all f###### day man. Can we please?'" Wayne quoted Trump. "I said, 'It's the President. OK.'"
But if you think Wayne stayed up at night wondering about the backlash, think again. "F### no, I don't care about no backlash for nothin' I do," he said, shrugging it off with the sort of nonchalance accompanying a mic drop. "You know me, man. My mama would've been mad if I didn't smile. That's the only backlash I might have worried about."
If critics related the photo to a political endorsement, Wayne made it clear he was not choosing sides or presidents. "I would've told him, 'You probably don't want that,'" he said when asked whether he supported Trump in the 2020 race. "I don't know what is going on. I can tell you who won the last game, but I can't really… Do you know what I mean? I don't f### with that kind of s###."
Just months later, in January 2021, Trump pardoned Wayne for a federal gun charge stemming from a 2019 incident on a private jet. Wayne is not playing politics, however. To him, it's just another crazed chapter in an already storied life. And when it's Lil Wayne in the frame, you best believe the back story is even less ordinary.
