Kendrick Lamar’s AMA Power Play, 8 Nominations That Could Knock Drake Off the Throne

The 37-year-old genius wordsmith Kendrick Lamar tops the nominations at the American Music Awards with a record-breaking eight, putting him in a prime position to enjoy a historic night at the ceremony by subtly blasting long-term nemesis Drake.

Lamar leads the pack and is in the running for Album of the Year and Favorite Hip-Hop Album for his acclaimed release GNX. The 9 Best-Dressed People at the BET AwardsK.R.I.T., whose razor-sharp diss track “Not Like Us” caused a serious splash when it was released, is nominated for Favorite Music Video and Favorite Hip-Hop Song the latter in which it will compete against not one but two tracks from Lamar himself: “Luther” featuring SZA, not to mention “Like That,” his scorching collaboration with Metro Boomin. Yeah, that’s three songs from one dude in the same category.

And it’s not a matter of quantity but quality dominance. If Kendrick wins all eight, he’ll join icons like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, who claimed the most AMAs in a single evening.

Naturally, this moment didn’t arise in a vacuum. Kendrick’s been a beast this year. First with five Grammy wins back in February, and then a career-defining performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, he’s riding a momentum wave that doesn’t tall in the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, a pair of other heavyweights are biting at their heels. Director of the Year was awarded to Taylor Swift, confirming she desperately strives to stay relevant. One spot behind Taylor: Post Malone, who scored eight nominations himself (Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, F-1 Trill) and made it evident his country crossover is no mistake. Emerging stars such as Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Shaboozey banked seven noms apiece, and the queen herself, Taylor Swift, scooped up six, bringing her career wins total of 40 to a new AMA record.

The show, hosted by the fabulous Jennifer Lopez, is set to air on May 26, 2025, in Las Vegas. Kendrick will be the one everyone watches. Can he make history? Will he beat Drake not just on line items but also on hardware? Whether you’re riding with Kendrick Lamar or not, the 2025 AMAs will be one you won’t forget.
