Lil Nas X Passed on a Taylor Swift Collaboration, But the Door’s Still Open

The Grammy-winning rapper Lil Nas X, the rule-bucking hit maker behind “Old Town Road,” has revealed that he almost collaborated with none other than pop superstar Taylor Swift. Lil Nas X posted with E! News that Swift had asked him to contribute a verse on a song. It was an opportunity for hundreds of artists to snap up without a second thought.

“We were up to something,” he said. “She suggested I try a verse on something, but I couldn’t catch a vibe for it, and it just didn’t happen.”

Not every day does an artist pass on the opportunity to work with one of the top names in the business. But for Lil Nas X, it’s never been about simply hopping on a track. For the hell of it, it has to feel like a fit. But his genre-blending style, where hip-hop, country, and pop collide in commerce and conversation, has never shied away from a core sense of artistic authenticity. And if the song weren’t vibing with him, he would not make that happen.

“When it happens… Global. World. Tay-tay and Nassy,” he said confidently.

The prospect of these two chart-toppers joining forces is undoubtedly thrilling. Taylor Swift, a songwriter whose mastery extends across genres and eras, and Lil Nas X, an innovator who succeeds by unabashedly subverting challenges, could collaborate on something so unexpected that we wouldn’t know what to say.

The miss only heightens the anticipation when and if they find the right track and step, it’s sure to be a moment. For now, fans can dream of what Lil Nas X and Taylor Swift would sound like in collaboration. And if the stars align, these two titans could even conquer the world.
