Ne-Yo's One-Way Love Lane, Four Girlfriends, No Other Men Allowed

The R&B singer, a master craftsman of smooth vocals and emotionally dense songwriting, hasn't brought the headlines not through some new hit single but via the personal lyrics of his actual love story. During a recent appearance on The Angie Martinez Show, the 45-year-old discussed his polyamorous lifestyle and, let's say, it's raising more than a few eyebrows.

Ne-Yo said he is one-quarter of a relationship with Cristina, Arielle, Moneii, and Bri. But this isn't your run-of-the-mill open relationship. As for the singer, it's a nice way to keep his options open, though he laid down the law: his girlfriends are not.
"No, they are not," he said when asked if the women could date other people. What are the mechanics of the relationship? They can love him, but only him.

Ne-Yo maintains that their arrangement is entirely consensual and that all women have decided to date him only. He says this setup works for them, although he admits it might not make sense to those outside their orbit.

"They're not prisoners," he said of the detainees. "They're adult women making a choice." Nevertheless, the decision serves him much more than anyone else in the arrangement.

This revelation has set social media ablaze, with debates igniting over double standards, emotional equity, and whether this qualifies as polyamory or something altogether different. But Ne-Yo is not here to justify himself. He is just living his life by his cannon.

In the midst of moving conversations around love and identity, Ne-Yo's situation falls in an unclear space between nontraditional and wildly one-sided. Yet, to hear him tell it, this isn't a matter of control or ego but a matter of honesty. He's not trying to be something he isn't and has been transparent from the beginning.

"They can't lie to people and expect happiness," he said. "But if you let the truth come out, even if it's a tough truth, at least you're being real."

Real love or real imbalance is a matter of who you ask. And for now, that hasn't appeared to bother Ne-Yo. He is doubling down on his version of romance, even though it seems less like an actual chorus than a solo act.

Ne-Yo's is a testament to that not every love song follows the same chord progression. Others dance to a rhythm only the parties can hear. Ne-Yo isn't slowing down or settling down anytime soon.
