Protesters Rally for Young Buck as Sheriff Urges' Peace'

A once-quiet morning ended in a cacophony of chants and homemade signs as supporters for rapper Young Buck filled the streets, calling for answers and action.

The protest broke out after Young Buck was arrested earlier in the week when he was sent to a local jail for 30 days. He remains in prison after failing to show up for his bond charge checks as part of an ongoing legal struggle about domestic assault and weapons charges.

The 42-year-old rapper, whose birth name is David Darnell Brown, was arrested on April 7 after a judge held him in contempt of court. Buck was ordered to report twice a month and to continue GPS monitoring, but he failed to meet those conditions, court documents said. Accordingly, his bond was canceled, and a new amount will be set after he completes his current sentence.

On the sidewalk outside the courthouse Friday, demonstrators waved signs and expressed frustration over what they said was a far larger issue. "This isn't just about Buck," one protester told the local station WKRN Channel 2. It's about eradicating all the corrupt police, judges, and DAs that allow our communities to be trapped in it."

After the story gained steam in the news, the Sumner County Sheriff's Office released a statement. Without wading into the specifics of the case, they nodded to the protest and reiterated their belief in equal treatment under the law and peaceful demonstrations. We support the free speech rights of our residents and the right to peaceable assembly by all.

According to the city's statement, the City of #SantaAna regularly engages with the community to[…]" from Chief David Valentin had the department monitor a few live social media videos and scan Facebook and other platforms for potential violence at the gatherings.

But as a broadcaster, the latest chapter is another harsh blow in a rollercoaster career with plenty of them. He was a member of 50 Cent's G-Unit and was present in the early 2000s rap scene, but Buck has suffered from legal problems and financial woes in recent years. Yet plenty of people are banking that he gets his comeback and making sure so much is clear.

Set against the backdrop of the legal system moving on and the rapper completing his 30-day stay, his community is still showing up and speaking out. Whether you take this movement as a protest for a single individual or a cry for change as a whole, there's no denying that people are taking notice.

And in a society that often confuses silence with acquiescence, they ensured their message was clear right at the jail gates.
