SZA Quietly Debuts "Not Beauty" After Months of On-the-Low Glow

Grammy-winning artist SZA is finally launching 'Not Beauty,' her new vegan lip gloss line, and yes, she's been wearing it straight under our noses since February.

You may recall SZA's gorgeous appearance in the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Kendrick Lamar. The glow? The lips? That shine? That was not Beauty since she has been test-driving her formula in public, never giving it away.

"Every time you've seen me with any sort of color lately, I am 100 percent wearing 'Not Beauty lip gloss,'" she told Vogue.

The line launches with three all-purpose shades, meant to do some heavy lifting with little effort: the soft, flirty pink "In the Flesh," the deep, brooding "Strawberry Jam," and an old-school crystal-clear "Quartz." She says the first two are her pins, providing a subtle tint that defines her naturally full lips without doing the absolute most.

"My lip combo is low-effort, high-impact, high-shine," she explains. That philosophy looks like the lifeblood of Not Beauty, the beauty that works as hard as she does onstage, at dinner, deep in a late-night heart-to-heart.

But do not confuse Not Beauty with a cash-in on the overpopulated celebrity electrolytes wave. Solána Rowe was transparent: this isn't about playing catch-up with the world's Rihanna and Selenas or chasing trends.

"This is not me trying to break into the beauty market," she added. "It's kind of me filling a need." "I wanted something that would last as long as my show, as long as my conversation, as long as my date."

Rooted in a cruelty-free, vegan ethos, the line is debuting with a slightly more intimate energy. There is no worldwide shelf explosion at the moment. Instead, fans can find the glosses at select pop-up shops along her six-week Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar, starting this weekend in Minnesota.

SZA hinted at some future expansions in her signature generation-defining range: lip stains, liners, and creams. Not Beauty is a three-shade statement of style, substance, and staying power. Quiet conviction, high-impact color, and a major shine Not Beauty represents SZA herself.
