Trump’s Easter Eruption, Rants, Rage, and the Resurrection of Old Grievances

Former President Donald J. Trump had different plans for a day meant for reflection and renewal. No Easter eggs or lilies, just fiery posts about Democrats, President Joe Biden, and the American justice system flooded his social media platform, Truth Social. The holiday explosion is less a festival than a public Trump-style lighting of resentments.

A ruling late Saturday by the U.S. Supreme Court put a hold on the deportations of a group of Venezuelan migrants under the Alien Enemies Act. The court’s unsigned order suspends the removals pending the outcome of legal challenges that are making their way through the system. It was a move that did not please Trump, and he ensured everyone knew it.

“Happy Easter to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics…” Trump started, launching what would become a rant sprinkled with name-calling, conspiracy, and grim imagery. And in a holiday message intended to spread joy and peace, the former president offered instead a warning: “Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, the Mentally Insane, and well-known MS-13 Gang Members and Wife Beaters” would be ushered back into the country by Democrats, naturally.

This was not exactly a general resentment session, either. Trump aimed directly at the courts and law enforcement officials, labeling them “WEAK and INEFFECTIVE” and accusing them of promoting a “sinister attack” against the country, an attack he darkly said “will never be forgotten.”

Trump’s rage may have also been fueled by newly intense scrutiny over the deportation of a Maryland resident, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was removed from the United States in March despite a court order protecting him dating to 2019. Now languishing in a prison in El Salvador, his case has become a flash point in the debate over immigration enforcement and the failure to handle legal protections properly. The department has since acknowledged it was an “administrative error,” but the fallout endures.

The Supreme Court’s decision was accompanied by sharp dissent from conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito and underscored the razor-thin margins and deep divides on immigration policy. The court earlier this year gave a narrow green light to the Trump administration’s application of the Alien Enemies Act. Still, with a catch: migrants who have been rounded up must receive notice and an opportunity to fight their removal.

With these developments stirring, Trump’s Easter meltdown looks like more than a holiday duct. It reflects deeper frustrations about the array of legal and political hurdles before them, from courtroom objections to administrative embarrassments.

And as most of America went to church on Sunday or gathered at dinner tables, Trump went to war on the internet armed with all-caps and exclamation points and all the outrage in his Truth Social feed.nTrump’s vision of Easter this year was less about resurrection than revenge.
