TRYHARD abandoning a career as a corporate attorney to heed the insistent summons of music. From his debut EP, "Chest Pains," establishes what seems like a mission statement and not so much an introduction as a release. There's an artist here who is prepared to take risks and has already demonstrated that risk can pay off. Leaving behind the law for music was a courageous move. But when the output sounds like this, it feels like destiny.
"Chest Pains" is brooding and hypnotic, laced with tension yet polished and precise, much like the night-out soundtracks. The song pulses with heavy, throbbing bass and emotionally naked singing that conveys the heat of the moment and the sting of its aftermath. "Chest Pains" is the sound of desire and remorse caught in a late-night standoff under jumping strobe lights.
The production is slick and purposeful, winding the tension around like a coiled spring before every beat relief, letting the groove bubble in the dark. It's the kind of track that's just as capable of electrifying a house party as it is of bouncing through your headphones on a late-night stroll through the city.
TRYHARD's strength is that it balances equal parts brooding and adrenaline, poetry, and pop hooks. "Chest Pains" isn't about the party high; it's about the emotional hangover after the party ends. The lyricism delves into the twoness of indulgence and how we pursue the night even when we know it may burn. And if this first track is anything to go by, we're in for a debut EP that may turn late-night jitters and morning-after contemplation into the next great sound in dark pop.
