The Louisiana rap legend Boosie Badazz threw up a post via Instagram hours after he learned he lost a crucial appellate challenge in his federal gun case to show off his new baby daughter Sevyn Emerald Hatch.
“I got to have something to smile about,” Boosie confessed, his delivery tinged with vulnerability and ego. And smile it did, as he shared the first images of newborn Sevyn, born April 23, complete with the hashtags “#prouddaddy,” “#SEVYNEMERALDHATCH” and “#daddysgirl” detailing the adorable moment.
Sevyn is Boosie’s ninth child, but the first with his fiancée, Rajel Nelson. Boosie, whose real name is Torrence Hatch, held the tiny ball of new life close to him in the snaps, and the couple looked over the moon with happiness.
Shortly before posting the photos, Boosie had sympathized with fans over a recent legal setback in an emotional video. “I lost my fight in court,” he said matter-of-factly. They won their appeal, and you know my case was dropped. So now I’m going to be battling these people again.”
That case springs from June 2023 arrest in San Diego, when the police said that they saw a gun sticking out of Boosie’s waistband during an Instagram Live that was part of a music video shoot. He was initially arrested on charges of being a felon with a firearm and transporting firearms across state lines and pleaded not guilty at his first court appearance, after which he was released on a $100,000 bond.
Federal charges were eventually dropped in July 2024 by a judge who said the law was unconstitutional when used against nonviolent offenders. Prosecutors had circled back after charges on a state level didn’t stick, hitting Boosie with two new federal counts: felon in possession of a firearm in interstate commerce and possession of a firearm while being a user of or addicted to a controlled substance.
The 41-year-old could face up to a decade in prison if found guilty. Even so, Boosie is allowing the heaviness of the courtroom to mute his spirit. “I built up my faith,” he said, vowing not to let the gavel dictate his perspective. “I’m finna post, my baby.”
In a bit of positive reinforcement during the trying weekend, Boosie also received two honorary doctorate degrees in music from Kingdom Heritage University, which were presented in St. Petersburg, Fla., for his influence and songwriting prowess in Hip-Hop.
So even as legal battles loom, a rapper like Boosie Badazz draws strength from fatherhood, music, and a tiny newborn already making a significant impact. There are no promises in this world; after all, nothing is guaranteed when anything is “promised.” So sometimes, a little of the brightest light weighs 7 pounds and is called Sevyn.
