The Grammy-winning artist SZA didn't address the harassment Megan Thee Stallion is experiencing in connection with the Tory Lanez case. She called it out with all the fury of someone who has had it up to here with seeing women, particularly Black ones, picked apart online for surviving trauma.
SZA posted a couple of targeted messages on Instagram after she witnessed new rounds of bullying directed at Megan. And let's face it: this wasn't just a "leave her alone" casual but was a mic drop.
"I'm just so shocked at the amount of ppl who are fully comfortable bullying a woman whom has proven to be the victim of assault. …... this belongs to me now, 'cause fuck all y'all,' if that's how we're supporting fucking women in 2020."
SZA's comment appeared on a post by @theluncheonlawyer. This Georgia-based criminal defense attorney has gone viral for a good reason: Why are we discussing "new evidence" from Tory Lanez's team at a press conference, not in a courtroom?
In 2020, Megan Thee Stallion was shot in the foot after leaving a party in the Hollywood Hills. Tory Lanez was found guilty in 2022 for the shooting and is currently serving a 10-year sentence. They've popped up again of late with allegations that Megan's former bestie, Kelsey Harris, was the real gunman and Lanez was just an innocent bystander trying to play peacemaker.
Their allegations are accompanied by alleged ring camera footage and some political muscle by Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has said she believes the case is "politically motivated" and has even written a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom requesting a pardon.
But the thing is, Megan Thee Stallion was shown in court to be a victim. That's not speculation, and that's not PR, but it was a fact that a jury found true. And yet here we are, her name trending again for all the wrong reasons.
SZA, who knows when to sound the alarm, left no ambiguity: public smear campaigns aren't cool, at least not in the corner of the internet where she hangs out. It's refreshing to hear loud voices and opinions, but it's necessary to see someone use his platform to push back against the noise. And SZA did it the only way SZA could: raw, honest, and fiery
