In a rare moment of true honesty, Angela Simmons sat down with Angie Martinez for the IRL podcast and opened up about her breakup with rapper Yo Gotti, one that fans suspected was on the rocks for weeks. But what she opened up about may have shocked some: she didn't want the split.
"I wouldn't have chosen it, but it was what was best," Simmons shared, her tone even but emotional. "But, I wouldn't have chosen it, no."
It was the first time Simmons confirmed the split of their relationship, estimated to be around two years, which had unfolded before an audience from the beginning. From Gotti's brash proclamations of love in his verses to the lavish posts they shared on Instagram, and not one lovey-dovey snapshot found between the two, their love story had all the makings of a modern-day hip-hop fairy tale. Alas, it seems not all love stories are forever.
While she declined to get into the specifics of what caused the split, Simmons, who made clear the decision to part ways was not made lightly or with any animosity, claimed that women are the ones who suffer from the stigma of having kids and not being married.
"Mad love and respect to him. He's doing his thing. I'm happy for him," she said warmly, adding that there are no hard feelings.
When Martinez wondered if Gotti was the one who had stopped it in its tracks, considering just how much he'd been publicly pining after her over the years, Simmons gently shut that down. "I had to make a decision," she said, declining to cite specific reasons. Some things are best left unsaid. "
In typical Simmons style, she remained steadfast about maintaining some privacy. "I just would never [tell people]. I'm just not that girl."
Even with the heartbreak, she's not fleeing her love for him or its publicness. "I'm a lover. I love love. I love relationships," Simmons answered with a smile. I don't regret sharing how I feel about it."
The breakup wasn't entirely out of the blue. In May 2025, fans began to suspect something after Simmons and Gotti posted cryptic messages to Instagram. Gotti wrote "Lonely in London," while Simmons shared a quote that said, "I want what wants me in life. Here, as everywhere, such blood flows, FLOWS. What goes GOES."
Yo Gotti has managed not to speak about the situation publicly, but check out the comment sections for that. His posts have been overwhelmed by supporters encouraging him to "go get her back" and showing love to the couple who had once won hearts online.
Simmons, she's not yet too jaded when it comes to finding love. She's kind of back out there when it comes to dating; she's not into trying to make things happen quickly, you know? No new romantic leads to report yet, and that's just fine with her.
Breakups are rarely clean. But Angela Simmons's grace in carrying it all teaches us that sometimes the toughest choices are also the ones that help us grow.
