The R&B powerhouses Brandy caught up with Gayle King Monica on CBS Mornings to discuss what might be the most buzzed-about tour of their lives, 'The Boy Is Mine Tour,' and, of course, they addressed the long-whispered-about feud that's been nipping at both their heels since the late '90s.
"They were trying to get us to do a tour as of '98," Brandy said, smiling as she retold the story of the years of missed opportunities and industry push-and-pull. "It finally just seemed the right time. It was a dream come true."
And with renewed attention thanks to Ariana Grande's playful homage to their 1998 smash, "The Boy Is Mine," not to mention a Grammy nomination for the remix the stars have realigned for this storied duo.
"There was a lot of chaos and drama, and there was just a lot of people around," Monica said, recalling now the early days of their professional relationship. "The song didn't help," Brandy said. "We were fighting over a boy. "Let's face it, we don't even like the same kind of boy; we could never share a boy," Monica added with a laugh.
It was a lighthearted moment that spoke volumes about the past, yes, but also about the distance they had traveled. Both musicians admitted that the friction, which was either real or perceived, did snowball over time. But with age and a change in viewpoint, they have been able to block out what Monica fondly referred to as the "peanut gallery" and do the work that needed to be done: talking to each other.
"It did become something," she conceded. "But we built the communication and the relationship to accomplish it."
Now, they're referring to this new chapter as a "musical marriage," a second union formed not only on history but on a fresh appreciation and understanding. And fans all around the country are willing to celebrate that growth right along with them.
'The Boy Is Mine Tour' comprises 24 U.S. stops, running from October 16 through December 7, 2025. They will be joined on stage by a star-studded lineup of Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and the recently crowned American Idol winner Jamal Roberts.
So, yes, the boy could have been the headline, but Brandy and Monica are showing us what the real story has been all along: two women navigating fame, finding common ground, and finally giving the world what it's been waiting for together.
