At this point, we're used to the unexpected regarding Drake's surprise albums, cryptic Instagram captions, and courtside histrionics. But even the devoted had a lot to gawk at this week when the Toronto superstar revealed his insane gambling ways.
On Tuesday, June 18, the Grammy-winning rapper took to Instagram Story to nonchalantly reveal a bombshell confession that got jaws dropping: he's lost over 8 million dollars in gambling this month alone. Yes, this month.
"I gotta show the other side of gambling," he wrote to millions of followers. "Losses are so fried right now."
He probably thinks twice when the rest of us make the "what the hell" wager of $50 on a parlay. Drake has been playing at an entirely different level, where losing six million dollars in Fortnite bets is just part of the month's damage.
Yet the rapper isn't taking off his betting jersey just yet. And, being Drake, he's doubling down literally. It's not all punches, though, as he's got a serious $800,000 up on the line for Game 6 of the NBA Finals: his bet that the Oklahoma City Thunder will wipe off the Indiana Pacers.
The bets? There will be another $200K for the Thunder to win outright and another $200K that it will be by 6–10 points. Given the right cards, he could take home around $1.7 million. Anyway, if not, it's a new page in the story of danger-living, high-rolling Drizzy.
He even gave a shout-out to fellow Canadian and Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, captioning the post with "check that box." This gesture of support would make some fans nervous if not for the infamous Drake Curse. That's the long-running internet joke that any team or athlete that Drake supports generally… loses.
Though it may make some laugh, this look behind the curtain is a rare episode of transparency from someone who's made luxury and excess look easy. Drake's association with the crypto betting platform Stake is no secret; he frequently streams himself on the service and actively promotes the site. But seldom has he been so blunt about what happens when the bets do not go his way.
"I hope I can post a big win for you all soon," he said. For now, fans will be watching. It's not so much to find out who wins Game 6 as to see whether Drake can reverse his luck or add another L to the month's score.
I love or side-eye him, but it's undeniable that Drake rolls large, lives loud, and never stops taking his chances, even when the house is winning.
