The Bronx rapper Ice Spice is officially hanging up her mic for a mic in a recording booth, but not for a verse this time. The Bronx rapper who swims in the charts has officially jumped into her first animated film, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, and all we have left to say is, yeah, kids, it’s the real deal.
The news hit the boardwalk like a searing hot Krabby Patty. Paramount announced that Ice Spice is joining the voice cast of the upcoming SpongeBob feature, which is hitting theaters on December 19, 2025. The role is Spellman’s first animated film role. It brings her full circle with the underwater icon, as she gifted us with the viral bop “Bikini Bottom” back in 2022, a cheeky homage to SpongeBob’s hometown that sent fans into a tizzy.

Now, not only is she giving a voice to a brand-new character in the movie, but she’s also contributing an original song to the soundtrack. If anyone can carry drill beats to jellyfish fields, it’s Ice Spice.
The long and short of it is that the gang’s ghostly journey, led by SpongeBob, pits them against the legendary Flying Dutchman; a gold star-worthy flex goes to the casting, which had no choice but to go with the one and only Mark Hamill. Set in a haunting fairground, the film is full of thrills, chills, and some serious belly laughs under the sea.
The cast is stacked with new and familiar voices: Regina Hall, George Lopez, Sherry Cola, Arturo Castro, and, naturally, the OG SpongeBob crew are all a part of this underwater quest.
As for Ice Spice, she played it calmly and understated it with a sweet “yay!!! ” on her Instagram Stories. It was subtle, but it was a smile clipped to a brightness never fully embraced.
Ice Spice released her first significant drop of the year, “Gnarly (Ice Spice Remix),” with KATSEYE, and the collab is off to a hot start. The pair are set to perform at the 2025 Kids’ Choice Awards on June 21, so fans have even more reason to watch.
Also on her ever-expanding rĂ©sumĂ© is an appearance in Spike Lee’s upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest, proving that she’s not just ready to take on the music charts.
With breakout hits and an animated blockbuster, Ice Spice is making 2025 her most versatile year yet. And honestly? It’s as much a gold standard for brilliant cartoons as that other show is for dumb ones. This visual and comic treasure hunt sneaks consumer-brand parodies, movie lifts, and sophisticated puns and wordplay into an abandoned diner laden with SpongeBob-themed flourishes from shelves held up by mitts to a condiment rack modeled on the innards of a barbecue grill. Seeing her name up there with SpongeBob’s in movie lights feels as right as a perfectly flipped patty.
