Jessie J Bravely has delivered some rare, unvarnished truths served with cheeky humor. The hard-core British power singer, praised for her deep, rich vocals and don’t-mess-with-me attitude, announced in an emotional Instagram video that she has early-stage breast cancer. The 36-year-old artist opened up slightly to her fans and the world about a deeply personal chapter she’d been walking through for months.
“I’ve been diagnosed with early breast cancer,” Jessie shared in that brave calm only she could bring. “Cancer sucks any way you look at it, but I’m keeping a positive attitude and working on a recovery.”
She was actually diagnosed before releasing her recent promo single, “No Secrets,” in April. Since then, Jessie has been in and out of medical tests while continuing to play, record, and, above all, according to form, keep smiling.
“But now, she’s crossing the line, not in surrender but in fierce self-defense. The singer will go on hiatus following the Capital Summertime Ball (June 15), on June 15, which means that she won’t be performing anywhere for the time it takes to have surgery/recover from her condition.
“Now I’m gonna burrow,” she said, somehow still light about it all. “It’s a very dramatic way to get your boob job,” she quipped with a knowing wink.
In her video, Jessie described how spreading the word about her diagnosis wasn’t about informing fans; it was a means to connect, process, and allow others to stand alongside her. “I don’t do it enough, and I cannot process it because I’m working so hard,” she admitted. “I know, too, how sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and their own stories, but I’m an open book.”
That open-hearted approach has already led to an outpouring of love from fans and fellow musicians. Rita Ora, Katy Perry, Wretch 32, and Snoh Aalegra were among those who immediately rallied with supportive messages.
In a subsequent Instagram story, Jessie J mixed a little vulnerability into the strength she had, which was just a lot for me. This week, I want to help everyone & I want to be on the go to make everything easier for everyone. ” Honestly, I need to process and talk about it, and I need a hug. You’ve always had my back through every one of my highs and lows, and I don’t want this to be another way you have to support me.
Jessie J, with the characteristic of self-assuredness and a touch of humor, signed off with this vow: “I will come back with a bigger pair of t** & more music.”
So, she may be retiring for now, but Jessie isn’t going out. She’s carving out space to heal on her terms, with grace, grit, and laughter, and when she comes back, it’ll be louder, prouder, and more real than ever.
