Kim K Goes Full Twist in "Bratz"

Kim Kardashian is set to fill some super fierce shoes; we're talking platform stilettos in a new on-screen adaptation of the popular doll line. Yes, that Kim. Reality TV queen, fashion empire, and also wicked overlord of a sparkly-toy-fueled universe.

The movie, which is still in the early stages of development, is already creating a stir, not only because of the nostalgia factor stemming from the enormously successful Bratz doll line, which has sold over 200 million dolls worldwide since its introduction in 2001 but also because of the headline-making casting decision. Kardashian, who loves nothing more than stealing the spotlight, is looking to steal the scene, too, while bringing a little extra sass and perhaps even a touch of shade.

For those who have become acclimated to Kim's ever-growing Hollywood resume, this is quite a shift into darker terrain. After voicing a role in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie and stoking some drama in American Horror Story: Delicate, Kim is not precisely just testing the acting waters, but she's doing a deep-end cannonball off the high dive, T-strap sandals and all. And let's be honest, if there's one person suited to playing a high-fashion villain, it's the woman who practically re-wrote the book on contouring.

The development continues a trend for Hollywood to transform iconic toys into full-grown screen spectacles. Barbie, breaking records in 2023, has harnessed the power of the names behind the iconic brands of our youth, and studios are racing to outdo each other in bringing the next nostalgia hit to life. And Amazon MGM appears to have emerged victorious in a fierce bidding war to secure the rights to Bratz, gambling big that the sassy, stylish dolls still have a lot yet to say on the big screen.

Behind the camera, the film is in capable and creative hands. Charlie Polinger and Lucy McKendrick are penning the script. Picturestart's Erik Feig and Julia Hammer, along with MGA Entertainment, the company behind the original Bratz universe, are producing. That mix of snappy writing and deep brand knowledge could result in just the correct calculation of attitude and authenticity for the film.

No release date has been announced yet, and the rest of the cast is being kept under wraps, but Kardashian's casting alone has been enough to drive fans and fashion enthusiasts wild. Will she go full Cruella? Regina George with a rhinestone edge? We'll find that out in time, but one thing's sure: This isn't your little sister's Bratz movie.
