Lil Wayne is getting ready to roll out a new installment in his storied Tha Carter series with the release of his 'Tha Carter VI' Tour, but not everyone is raising a toast yet. In a development that has fans cocking their eyebrows, not to mention their thumbs, which are now a flurry of action, there is a conspicuous omission on the tour schedule: his hometown of New Orleans.
To kick it all off with a bang, the 'Tha Carter VI' Tour starts this Friday, June 6, in the most epic fashion at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The trek, which supports Wayne's long-awaited 14th studio album, sends the New Orleans native on the road in over 34 cities throughout North America, such as Los Angeles, Toronto, Atlanta, Dallas, and Minneapolis, and New Orleans is not even a mention.
It didn't take long for fans to notice, either. Soon after the tour announcement, social media was abuzz. "Bruh, to not have New Orleans on here is crazy," wrote one commenter, expressing the disbelief of many. Another said, "I might just be dick riding, but where the hell is Louisiana?"
The void is slightly more painful, considering how far Wayne's roots go in the Crescent City. New Orleans is the city that raised him and molded his sound, and he went from Hot Boy to global icon. With 'Tha Carter VI' his first Carter album since 2018 and first solo album since Funeral in 2020, this tour feels like a capital-M Moment, one many fans and followers figured would climax with a New Orleans homecoming.
The MSG opener looks likely to be a spectacle in itself. Scheduled for Friday, it will feature a genre-defying lineup of guests on the stage, such as Miley Cyrus, Bono, Machine Gun Kelly, Elephant Man, Euro, and Wyclef Jean. Tyga and Belly Gang Kushington will serve as support throughout the entire tour, and NoCap will join him on select dates.
Tickets went on pre-sale this past Tuesday (June 4), and general admission went on sale Friday morning at 10 a.m. local time. Presented by Live Nation, the tour is set to kick off July 30 in Bristow, Va., and wrap up Oct. 2 in West Palm Beach, Fla.– a hop, skip, and a jump away from Wayne's new home base in Miami. However, there is no word on a return to the Big Easy yet.
Of course, Wayne has other ideas, and there's always a possibility of adding dates. Yet the message is loud and clear for fans back in the 504: sometimes even home doesn't make the map.
This could just be an accidental scheduling oversight, or it may be a very calculated move. It is clear that Lil Wayne is back, 'Tha Carter VI' is coming, and the whole industry will have to feel it again, not just in New Orleans.
