Brightr don't gradually wade into their second full-length 'YEAR TWO,' but jump head-first into the deep end. The opening song on that album, and this one, is "Sunshine Coast," which does much to set the tone raw, honest, and emotional, exact, with a depth of field like the most intimate form of adventure.
At the first flutey chime of the wizard-wheezing hog-nosed synths or the plucked, dreamed guitar lines that tremble around Laurie's dactylic voice, up rears the rich layering and intricacy of a delicately subtled backdrop that glistens like sunshine-splash and water. His voice grows a bit ragged with belief, occasionally breaking or coming on with the force of a shout you can't ignore. It's emo at its most polished: stripped down, unapologetically vulnerable, but melodically fat.
There's a touch of lyrical openness that keeps "Sunshine Coast" hitting hard without ever straining. It's emotional without the histrionics, only honest storytelling and masterful musicianship. Brightr knows just how to strike the balance between fragility and strength, pulling you into a folk-tinged world that throbs with authenticity.
Leading off 'YEAR TWO,' "Sunshine Coast" is one of those songs that sticks around, not because it requires it, but because it gets in there and doesn't let go. With dates coming up across the UK and Ireland, Brightr is set to take this intimate ethic on the road. If this opener is anything to go by, 'YEAR TWO' will be worth the ride, and "Sunshine Coast" is a stellar way to start.
