Mariah Carey Cooks Up Clues and Sweet Surprises for Possible July Album Drop

The interweb’s favorite chanteuse, every bit as famous for her vocal acrobatics as she is for her expert teasing, has only gone and stirred the pop pot once more with a 37-second teaser video, her fandom gasping for air in the process. Posted to X (formerly Twitter), the clip does nothing more than splash “MC16” onto the screen before ending the teaser with an enticing notice: “MC16 Announcement Tomorrow.”

The clip follows just one day after Carey released a tantalizing snippet of a track titled “Sugar Sweet,” a light and breezy bop that accompanied her as she bakes in the kitchen. Yes, Mariah was in the kitchen, for real, and possibly also in the kitchen of life.

In keeping with her known penchant for drama, Carey didn’t make fans wait too long. She quickly followed with a second video, in which she confirmed that her long-awaited 16th studio album will be released on September 26, 2025. It appears that the release may be coming earlier than the official date, on July 21, 2025, if industry gossip is to be believed.

This new project, Carey’s first full-length studio album since 2018’s “Caution,” has been a long time coming. She’s been finished with the album for a while, it seems: during an interview with Apple Music last month, she quite definitively confirmed as much, although she was still being joyfully coy about precisely when it would be coming out.

“What is next? The album coming out. I don’t want to say too much about it because I just don’t want to give it all away. It’s done,” she said, sounding as if she were about to burst and tell you every single detail.

Stoking the flames even more, Carey unveiled a new track in June called “Type Dangerous,” an incredible and brooding number that only intensified the holes burning in fans’ pockets.

If this is the rollout we think it is, it’s vintage Mariah layered, cheeky, and very much on-brand. Her skill for writing the narrative without losing us is only surpassed by her five-octave range.

Not to mention that this is not just another artist dropping an album. Even following more than 200 million records sold worldwide, five Grammys, and a discography that includes 15 studio albums, four EPs, and countless chart-topping hits, Carey is still a giant in the world of pop. Her influence is inarguable, and if the new songs are a sign, she’s far from done.
