Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave became an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a shootout in San Diego last month, June 2025, amid an attempted robbery. But instead of ducking as most of us would and running for cover, Troy reached for his gun and made his stand.
The incident occurred in mid-June 2025 outside a garage, where Troy was waiting for celebrity chef Geoff Cole after finishing a project with redeemable ratings. A video shot from surveillance cameras shows just how explosive the encounter was: A man in a mask is seen padding through an alley when, suddenly and at a fierce speed, he lunges at Cole. But before he could, Troy Ave pulled out a gun and shot in his direction, causing the attacker to stumble backward in the other direction.

The video also caught Troy running after the would-be robber and firing at least two more shots as the man ran away. It was not immediately clear if the suspect was hit, and as of now, no injuries have been reported. The provocative move has elicited a range of reactions, from applause to suspicion.
Pretty shaken up but grateful, Cole took to Instagram on July 16 to publicly thank Troy Ave. "I came home after celebrating the success of a sold-out Chef Fest with/ Love & support across the entire West Coast! Oscillation," Cole wrote. "AND A HATER FROM THE SAME CITY????????TRIED 2 DESTROY EVERYTHING I BUILT. This is the 2nd time, and it WON'T be a 3rd! s/o two my BROTHER Ave for Holding it Down in a Place where most woulda RAN or FOLDED."
But while some fans are quick to declare Troy a hero, others are scratching their heads. Allegations have circulated across social media, with some skeptics suggesting that the entire thing appears staged, perhaps it's a stunt for attention.
"Y'all believe anything on here. Great promotion for that song tho," one user wrote, referring to Troy's recent music release. Other posters criticized the timing and choreography of the action, insinuating that Troy was already going for his gun when the attacker never should have revealed himself. "Why u gotta fake that s### for clout? S### corny af," another user added.
It's not the first time Troy Ave has found himself engulfed in a cloud of gun-related controversy. He has already served time for his part in the 2016 shooting at New York's Irving Plaza, a case that still hovers in the public consciousness when his name is mentioned.
Whether this last one was an example of legal self-defense or something too grabbed-from-the-movies for the cameras, one fact comes through: There's no running in Troy Ave. And love him or hate him, the dude stays prepared.
