Mike Vorpal takes a bold step into the spotlight with his debut EP "Memes," offering listeners an introspective and explosive experience. Over the course of six songs and just short of half an hour, "Memes" encapsulates the chaos, beauty, and uncertainty that define contemporary living, folded into the dark wave urgency and guitar-driven grime that underpin Vorpal's aesthetic.
"Memes" are an emotional maze. Vorpal's lyricism is sharp yet deep, melding otherworldly melodies with thick layers of distortion and heartbeat-like rhythms that feel like breath. This is a universe in which openness and ferocity are inseparable, melody and menace mingling on the same out breath. Mike Vorpal makes a point with "Memes". The track, "Manhunter," makes that obvious, a brooding, insistent descent into the storm of noise and menace beyond. The guitars don't just wail, they prowl. It broods and doesn't let up, a good first taste of the dark emotional undercurrent weaving through this EP. Songs like "House of Capricorn" and "Overboard" extend that energy, textures woven through raw lyricism. Every song feels like a transmission from the subconscious, sharp and lovely and very much still alive.
But it's on "Planet Earth" that Vorpal demonstrates his full range as a songwriter. Beneath the distortion and edge, there's disbelief and yearning, a sliver of light trying to cut through static. At 29 minutes and 12 seconds, Memes is immersive and efficient, every second gleams with purpose. The show's dark wave underbelly also periodically explodes with light, sharing raw human emotion, a demonstration of Vorpal's mastery over contrast and tension.
