Penned in honor of iconic guitarist Eric Clapton on his 80th birthday, “Brave’n’Strong” transports back to the gilded era wedged between Clapton’s first couple of solo records, when guitars were raw and wounded cries escaped their frayed ends, unburdened by overthought tone and free of gods like blues royalty. The guitar work hums with a smoky intimacy, the rhythm section treads exactly the right line between solid and soulful, and the vocals have an unforced warmth that sounds as though it’s been lived through.
