Displaced Stranger, from the small town of Lynden, WA, unveils their first full-length album, "Grounding." It's a 12-song journey that challenges the idea that musical brilliance comes with age. Instead, it comes from having a heart full of passion, curiosity, and creative courage. This humble home-studio masterpiece is the work of a very young musician, but it has the depth, sophistication, and soul of a veteran performer. The LP is just under 53 minutes long.
Don Sullivan, the man behind the Displaced Stranger, was inspired by Whiskey Advocate Icons of Our Generation Redwood Empire's whiskey releases. Now, he's inspired by a full album release, which was enough to turn an initial spark into a fully formed journey. From the brilliance of "Golden Hour," which was written in just 30 minutes and inspired by an epic sunset, to the endless guitar solos in "Emerald Giant," every song shows that the artist is a master of his craft and can always speak from the heart.
"Grounding" strikes a perfect balance between being catchy and being deep. "Pipe Dreams" opens the album with a reflective, thoughtful energy, similar to the soft layers of instruments in "Lost Monarch." Songs like "Breathing" and "Garden of Thorns" demonstrate a mastery of pacing and dynamics, guiding listeners through a smoothly flowing soundscape. "The River Knows My Name" and "Blossoms" follow suit with storytelling-soaked incursions, lined with a prickled aura of intimate musical landscapes that further illustrate Sullivan's musical DNA.
The record's quiet parts, like "Beautiful Dreamer" and "Cottage by the Sea," are very personal and make you feel like you're in a certain place. This is different from songs like "Van Duzen" and "Wild Rose," which let you hear the wild, experimental side of Sullivan's guitar playing. When "Emerald Giant" comes on, you can let your technical skills and imagination run wild. Everything good in music happens at the intersection of intuition and discovery.
Sullivan recorded and produced "Grounding" all by himself in his home studio, and Lupo mastered it at Das Boot Recorders. Displaced Stranger is a one-person band in the musical sense. He can make fully realized, interesting music out of nothing but curiosity, hard work, and a love of sounds. "Grounding" is the record that announces the arrival of a new music star for curators, fans, and anyone who wants to hear some real, unpolished music.
