panfriedxiao turns space into sound and motion into memory with “Liquid Air”

With "Liquid Air," NYC-based producer and artist panfriedxiao’s debut feels less like a conventional single and more like an atmosphere you enter. The track unfolds at a stately pace, coaxing the listener to slow down and note how sound can breathe and fuzz and come into focus, all at once. Melodic pads swell and recede in clarity, fluffing between diffuse and focused states. Despite the repetition of phrases, they never precisely land in the same location twice, creating an impression of constant movement.

"Liquid Air" is particularly compelling due to its spatial awareness. Wind chime–like tones swoop and flicker in unexpected ways, panning left and right and delicately recalibrating the listener’s sense of position. Strings eventually swell and move to the forefront, steady and expressive, while soft vocal humming moves through the arrangement like a human pulse beneath the surface. When the flute comes in, it feels far away, angelic, as though echoing down from on high.

"Liquid Air" also speaks to the artist’s own history. Panfriedxiao, who has a background in classical piano and honed his sound through band experience in Beijing before moving to New York as a first-generation immigrant, brings a quiet discipline and emotional restraint to the music. Coupled with the release’s cover art, made in collaboration with fellow Chinese visual artist Xinyue Chen, the work feels cohesive and intentional.
