Backsprint’s “Black Silence” is the fourth single of the band’s current album rollout, following “You and Me Honey,” their cover of Van Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately,” and “My Last Song to You.” The band turns their attention inward, exploring the darker corners of self-reflection while at the same time drawing a firm line between themselves and the outside world. The weight of the emotion sits naturally in the performance.
The low-range voice of Uroš Jojić is an important factor in the song's personality and sounds like Johnny Cash's voice in his later years. He's backed by a grounded band sound, guitars, bass, drums, harmonica, that feels direct and unvarnished. Something is compelling about the space between the audience and the music, the music feels present, not processed.
That authenticity is thanks to Backsprint’s recording method. The rough sound of the band playing together, in the same room, in several takes, no overdubs, no pitch correction, no click track. That honesty does a lot for “Black Silence,” making the message of solitude feel especially immediate and human.
