Stephani Ezatoff’s “Run On” is a compelling homage to the traditional African American gospel hymn as performed by Elvis Presley in 1967. Recorded at Nashville’s historic Sound Shop Studio on Music Row, not far from where Elvis himself recorded his, the single has a meaningful link to its inspiration but doesn’t simply fall back on nostalgia.
Aaron Minick’s arrangement lends the track a dramatic sense of scale that reflects the song’s duality of divine love and judgment. That tension gives “Run On” a sense of purpose as it builds, making the atmosphere feel more engaging. Ezatoff’s most notable contribution stems from an unconventional creative decision: she performs all of the vocals herself.
Those layered vocals create an ethereal intensity throughout the performance, which helps explain why producer Brian Speer described the result as being like a movie soundtrack. The effect is powerful without any superfluous embellishment. “Run On” is an homage to the gospel tradition and Elvis's take on it, but it also gives Ezatoff room to carve out her own emotional identity. It's dramatic, a reverent, carefully crafted performance.
