C’batch’s latest EP, "I Guess You Want It This Way," takes a deeply personal musical journey spanning more than two decades and brings it into the present. The EP runs 17 minutes and 52 seconds and features six versions of the same composition, chronicling the growth of a song that never quite finished in C’batch’s mind for about 26 years. The project is a creative nod to reggae and a tribute to legendary Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, bringing new life to this longtime composition while keeping the core hook and melodic backbone intact.
The EP opens with "I Guess You Want It This Way (Cinematic Reggae) 1," setting a reggae-infused mood before moving into "I Guess You Want It This Way Cinematic Reggae 2," which further delves into the cinematic rendition. These openings emphasize the song's ability to take different forms while retaining its recognizable musical core. The first and second versions of "I Guess You Want It This Way" then split the title's composition into further interpretations, letting its central ideas unfold through contrasting arrangements.
The reggae influence is even more prominent on the rest of "I Guess You Want It This Way (Reggae 2)," and the closing "I Guess You Want It This Way (Reggae Dub) 1" features a dub-oriented ending that broadens the EP's sonic scope. Taken together, the six versions form a unified exploration of a single composition from different creative viewpoints.
And the story behind the EP’s completion is especially compelling. Inspired in part by C’batch’s wife Yvette, who challenged him to write a reggae song, the song survived early attempts, a trip to Jamaica, and years of creative rethinking. Finally, in 2026, C’batch completed the piece by writing lyrics around the melody he’d been carrying for decades. The result is "I Guess You Want It This Way," a long-awaited musical notion finally in full flower.
