DownTown Mystic finds classic rock magic in a piano-led groove on “Maybe Love's A Crime”

Robert Allen, writer and producer, lends “Maybe Love’s A Crime” vintage character and musicianship through his roots-rock project, DownTown Mystic. The single blends classic roots-rock, R&B-tinged shuffle, and vintage guitar-rock sensibilities, powered by a seasoned cast of players who make a groove sound easy.

Drummer Steve Holley and bassist Paul Page both recorded their parts in one take, lending the song its natural, immediate pulse. Jeff Levine adds another defining ingredient with his piano, adding movement and character to the arrangement. Page’s suggestion of a shuffle-based direction, informed by his experience working with Dion, helped Allen find the rhythmic approach that suited the song.

“Maybe Love's A Crime” uses seasoned musicianship to deliver a lively, coherent performance. The two-song single is accompanied by the TV Mix, which provides further context. Built around roots-rock, piano and an easy rhythmic swing, the release is a confident reminder that old-school musical chemistry still has plenty of sway when the players know exactly what a song needs.
