Last Night Watchman returns with "Old Blighty," a five-song EP that combines thoughtful songwriting, layered instrumentation, and an insatiable curiosity about history, humanity, and the passing of time. At 21 minutes and 59 seconds, the release captures the creative freedom of an artist returning to recording after an extended break, building a distinctive sound from his home studio in Herefordshire. The EP is mainly a solo effort, but longtime friend and former bandmate John Horton, aka Sven Vortex, plays lead guitar and keyboards on the title track and the closing song.
Last Night Watchman kicks off with "Old Blighty," taking on Britain's colonial history through a song inspired by the toppling of Edward Colston's statue in Bristol. The track sets the tone for the EP's willingness to tackle uncomfortable historical subjects through music, giving the songwriting a purpose beyond personal reflection. The discovery of ancient human footprints in Norfolk, and the great geological shifts that have shaped our planet, lead "Footprints" into another realm of history. Together, these opening tracks link human actions and existence to a much longer historical timeline.
Conversely, "Get the Best out of Life" offers broader reflections on mortality, change, and how people approach their time in the world in a more indirect, life-affirming way. "Fool's Prayer" adds another chapter to the collection, helping carry its thoughtful songwriting journey forward before "Towards The Sun" brings the EP to a close, with Horton's contributions once again.
"Old Blighty" is richer, with layers of guitar and vocal overdubs, banjo, ukulele, keyboards, and orchestral sounds. This is the sound of a songwriter who likes to play, but doesn't want to give up control of the studio. The project is based on a broad musical landscape and combines lyrical ideas with a variety of textures and arrangements. Last Night Watchman's "Old Blighty" is a considered, expansive collection that invites listeners to think about history, humanity, and the fleeting nature of life.
