6ix9ine Platinum Plaques Sell for Staggering Prices as IRS Closes

Tekashi 6ix9ine's taste for excess may have finally brought him a world of pain, but that didn't prevent fans and collectors from paying incredible prices for markers of his legacy. The beleaguered hip-hop star garnered headlines for his extravagant existence, and many legal snafus have recently had to part with some of his most treasured items, thanks to the IRS. And surprisingly, it wasn't diamond-encrusted jewelry that had bidders in a frenzy; it was platinum plaques that became the real stars of the auction.

The sale, conducted by Market Auctions out of South Florida, smashed all expectations as throngs of buyers fought to own a piece of 6ix9ine's trouble-ridden yet inarguably impactful career. Though his collection of luxury items, a much-coveted Hermès Birkin bag and a Cartier Santos stainless steel watch among them, sold for impressive prices, his record plaques smashed estimates before they went on sale.

One of the biggest surprises was the platinum plaque for "BEBE," which fetched an eye-watering $24,320. Hot on its heels was the plaque celebrating his breakout hit "GUMMO," which fetched a jaw-dropping $18,240. Both industry experts and collectors were surprised by the extreme demand, with many awards selling for three or four times their anticipated values.

"This was the sleeper hit of the auction," said Jacob Kodner, Managing Partner of Market Auctions. "Collectors and fans alike identified these plaques as one-of-a-kind pieces of music history."

Indeed, these weren't simply exuberant flourishes. They were concrete evidence of an artist who, for better or worse, had a footprint in the music business. The buyers weren't simply buying memorabilia; they were buying legacy.

And, he said, this wasn't some fandom-fueled frenzy. "We witnessed key enrollments from major buyers of several items whether it was a plaque, or several jewelry pieces, or luxury goods." "That was a serious auction for serious high-end collectors."

The sale follows a dramatic IRS raid at 6ix9ine's Florida home in April 2024. The government has taken his assets as part of an ongoing push to collect unpaid taxes, a comeuppance for the rapper, whose legal and financial woes have been building for years. His flamboyant lifestyle has gone from glitter to gaunt. Lawsuits, judgments, and government intervention have reshaped his life into a cautionary tale of excess and mismanagement.

However, with 6ix9ine on its way to losing, Market Auctions has capitalized on the event's success. They're already preparing for their next big sale on March 12, 2025. Competition hasn't let up in the auction houses, where the upcoming sell-off includes a rare ceramic piece by Pablo Picasso, a Marc Chagall lithograph, and a dazzling Tiffany's necklace, a reminder that when it comes to the world of high-stakes bidding, whether for platinum plaques or priceless art, there's no slowing down.

For now, 6ix9ine's former accolades belong to the highest bidder for pieces of rap history. Whether he manages to set his financial ship right is still to be determined, but one thing is sure: his influence still comes with a considerable price tag.
