And although it's been almost twenty years (that's two decades, oh wow) since the world's biggest high school heartbreaker, John Tucker, got some of his own medicine, a new wave of nostalgia might plot out a must-see Round 2! Grammy-winning R&B superstar Ashanti says talks about a sequel to the 2006 cult classic John Tucker Must Die are "very much alive" behind the scenes, and she's down.
Ashanti confirmed the news this week, spilling the tea in a recent interview with People magazine, where she revealed her continuing chats with co-star Arielle Kebbel, who's been championing her cause to make a sequel happen.
"Arielle, she texts me! We've been in some back-and-forth. She told me that she had this idea, and I was like, 'Look, if we can pull this thing together, I'm down,'" Ashanti gushed. "It'd be funny to do a part two."
Fans had speculated about it for years, and momentum for a sequel gained steam earlier this year when Kebbel reunited with original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre stars Jesse Metcalfe and Sophia Bush at Epics Con Chicago. In a panel, the three of them revealed a significant bombshell: there is a script for John Tucker Must Die 2, and it has all the original characters.
For the uninitiated, the 2006 hit starred three high school girls — portrayed in the movie by Ashanti, Kebbel, and Bush — who realize they've all been two-timed by the same smooth-talking, basketball-playing ladies' man, John Tucker (Metcalfe). With the aid of Brittany Snow's character, Kate, they concoct an elaborate plan to shatter his heart publicly. "Jawbreaker" was a witty, satirical look at revenge and teenage friendship, and it secured its place among the Y2K-but-make-it-quirky crowd.
Kebbel has been the most outspoken advocate for the franchise's return, describing it as a "special project" she's supported behind the scenes. Back in October, she spoke to People about how "everyone's very supportive" and how hard she's been pushing to get the cast back together.
But it's unclear that all the original stars are in the know. Brittany Snow spoke on Penn Badgley's Podcrushed podcast earlier this week about not being heavily involved in discussions about the sequel.
"I didn't know what occurred, and I was like (to Kebbel), 'You go. 'Go forward with that (idea),'" Snow said. "So that's the last I had heard about it. She was trying to make it happen, and I guess it did. "I'll read whatever they've worked hard.
So, what is the next step for John Tucker Must Die 2? With a script already in place and Ashanti excited, fans may finally be closer than ever to seeing the revenge squad reunite. If this sequel does get made, it sounds like a trip down memory lane with tons of attitude, scheming, and some well-deserved karma.
