Although Benzino is no stranger to controversy, his latest podcast appearance proves that he's never too far away from defending his legacy, for better or worse. Amidst a contentious back-and-forth on the "Big Dookie Chain" podcast, the former co-owner of The Source magazine bristled when the podcaster made an assertion that the media mogul "fumbled" his time there as the once-great Hip-Hop magazine's head of the operations.
Things turned sharply when the host referenced long-held criticism of Benzino's management of The Source, but using the word "fumbled" sent Benzino off the deep end.
"You don't sit here and talk about what the f### I fumble," he screamed. "Get the f### out of here. What have you fumbled?"
As the host tried to calm things down, noting that he had taken time to highlight Benzino's role at the magazine, the former media mogul wasn't having it. Calling the host out for inciting drama, Benzino responded, "Man, listen, bro. I saw it coming. You wanted to do this. You thought you didn't do that last time. Because all these other crackers be like, 'He f##### The Source up.'"
The back-and-forth devolved rapidly, and when the host attempted to end the conversation, Benzino dropped an unpolished, parting shot before walking out.
In another clip from the interview, Benzino continued his tirade and added, "You was a fan of what the f### I did. I disapprove of what you've done." I tried to be, but you are giving off a hater vibe."
Of course, a Benzino interview wouldn't be without a few shots at his longtime foe, Eminem. While he didn't share details, it was evident that he's still angry over the two's Feud of the Century, which could have led to The Source's decline.
Benzino's involvement at The Source has been scrutinized for years. Though he was brought on as a silent partner with founder Dave Mays in 1996, his control over editorial decisions became a public matter in the early aughts.
Critics charged him with using the magazine to promote his music, like awarding unusually high marks to his 1999 album Classic Limited Edition. Even his beef with Eminem was exacerbated by The Source being a platform filled with personal grudges rather than an actual music magazine.
Eventually, as backlash swelled and rival magazines proliferated, Benzino and Mays were ousted from The Source, which began the publication's downward slide from its pedestal.
Benzino, however, has no regrets about his time at the magazine despite all the criticism. Defending his legacy, he answered questions about his so-called mismanagement: "I don't wanna hear that s###."
"Everybody had something, and maybe something occurred," he added. "Had 18 years, made millions of dollars and done s### all around the world with it. You can't tell me s###."
Love him or hate him, Benzino won't let anyone rewrite his story without a fight. And if this latest podcast appearance showed anything, it's that he's still got plenty of fight left in him.
