Cassie Ventura's courtroom fight against Sean "Diddy" Combs is heating up, and it doesn't look good for the disgraced music mogul. Cassie's legal team shot back against Diddy's latest effort to discredit the damning CNN footage ahead of his much-anticipated May trial, calling the music mogul's defense strategy "disingenuous and desperate."
In case you missed it, CNN rocked the industry last year when it aired security footage reportedly showing Diddy violently attacking Cassie. The video captured him punching her, dragging her across the floor, kicking her, and throwing a vase at her head. The public backlash was immediate and fierce, and Diddy was soon compelled to make a public apology, saying he was "high on drugs" and had hit "rock bottom."
But now, as his trial approaches, Diddy's legal team is race-walking to exclude that footage from his trial. His lawyers accused CNN of editing the clip, contending that the video was shown in a way that made the attack seem far more violent than it was. "As such, the CNN videos do not accurately and fairly represent the events in question," his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, argued Thursday in court.
Douglas Wigdor, Cassie's attorney, took issue with that argument. "It is not surprising that Combs would make a disingenuous argument to keep the disturbing video away from the jury," he said, referring to the defendant by his last name. In short, Diddy's legal team is searching for arguments to raise reasonable doubt where there is none, and the evidence is already overwhelming.
And while Diddy denies any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty to all counts against him, including federal counts of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting people for prostitution, the video is among the most damning evidence against him. The prosecution will likely rely heavily on the footage in its case, and Wigdor believes it will hold up in court. "I have no doubt the video accurately and fairly depicts what transpired, will be received into evidence… and Combs will be called to account for his depravity," he said.
This newest legal filing comes amid multiple allegations against Diddy over the years, many of which stem from his long-term relationship with Cassie from 2007 to 2018. She accused him of longstanding physical abuse, and the CNN video only buttresses that allegation. Diddy's pathetic attempt to undermine the video's credibility doesn't change the truth that he had already played his aggression out for the world to see. But now that his lawyers are scrambling to get things under control, he hopes he can blame the course of events on circumstances out of his power.
Diddy's lawyers intend to file formal papers in the coming weeks, arguing that the video should not be allowed to be presented as evidence. But, considering the weight of the footage and Diddy's past comments, that motion feels unlikely to succeed. With the trial date approaching, the courtroom will be under everyone's watchful eye, looking to see if justice will finally be served.
