Dawn Staley’s Iced-Out Gift From Plies Sparked a Historic South Carolina Victory

When Hip-Hop and college basketball come together, you’re guaranteed to see something special. And rapper Plies ensured that surprising South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley with a stunning, gem-encrusted chain before her team’s NCAA Tournament opener against Tennessee Tech. And whether it was a stroke of good fortune or a sprinkling of Plies’ pixie dust, the Gamecocks answered the call in record-breaking form.

A longtime fan of South Carolina women’s hoops, Plies took his love for Staley to the next level when he gifted her a lavish custom chain before Friday’s (March 21) contest. The pendant was a sparkling homage to the team’s past and present success, with the years of their national championships, 2017, 2022, and 2024, crowned with a glittering basketball. But it wasn’t simply about the bling; the back of the chain bore a heartwarming inscription: “Dawn Staley, ‘God is within her she will not fail! Psalm 46:50.’ ”

It wasn’t just a fashion statement but became a motivational symbol. Staley even had the iced-out piece on the sideline while her squad delivered an absolute clinic against Tennessee Tech and won by an all-time high score of 108-48. The 60-point margin established a new school record for the most significant NCAA Tournament victory in program history, besting their previous best, a 58-point romp against Howard in 2022. After the dominant performance, Staley took to social media to thank Plies, stating that the gesture was more than just the shine.

“I realized you didn’t give me this piece of treasure for anything but love. I appreciate you for your big one, but you always do your big one. Thank you for your love, support, and organic belief in @gamecockwbb.” I’ll wear it with pride, knowing our mission,” Staley wrote.

Plies, who has never held back from expressing his feelings, replied with an equally emotional message. “The Way I Admire U No Gift & No Amount Money Could Ever Compare That!! It’s What U Exude & Stand For As A Human That I’m A Stan For. The Wins & Losses Aren’t Why I Came 2 U. The Purpose & Who U Are As A Person Is Why I Came 2 U!! This World Is So Blessed To Have U,” he posted on Instagram.

The Gamecocks are seeking their fourth national title, entering the 2025 NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed for the ninth time in school history. With a 50-17 all-time tournament record, they’re showing yet again why they’re one of the most feared programs in women’s basketball.

South Carolina vs. Indiana Hoosiers, Sunday, March 23, 2025. If their performance against Tennessee Tech is any indication, the Gamecocks are dialed in and prepared to go for another title run. And if Staley continues to rock that Plies chain? It might well become the team’s new good-luck charm.
