LiAngelo Ball, better known as GELO, is here to set the record straight. The basketball star turned rapper is fighting back against accusations by his children's mother, Nikki Mudarris, that he's a deadbeat dad. As the internet has speculated, LiAngelo isn't letting the noise get to him. Instead, he is making it clear that he takes the job of fatherhood seriously and will not allow false narratives to define him.
What is the most shocking rumor he's heard about himself? LiAngelo does not mince words. "I don't like when n* try to say I'm like a deadbeat pop or something," he said. "Cuz I be with my young n* every day for real. I've raised them up."
The former UCLA star and middle sibling in a family of NBA standouts Lonzo Ball, whom he accompanied to a Lakers game this week, and LaMelo Ball made it clear he has always been there for his children, regardless of what the outside world may think. "I feel like a lot of s* be misleading, sometimes," he confessed.
But instead of allowing the chatter to affect him, he's unfazed. "Everybody saying something, but I don't get too outta pocket for it," he said. "I don't be mad over it. I really don't go on my s*. I mean, I just do a performance, put my phone away, hang out with the gang. See what's happening."
In addition to the drama with Mudarris, LiAngelo addressed previous comments from his father, LaVar Ball, about his former relationship. At one point, LaVar made statements praising Mudarris, although LiAngelo now appears to care little about those comments.
"That was awhile back," he said, dismissing it and letting it be clear he's moving on in his father's opinions. "He don't for real," he said when asked whether LaVar meddles in his romantic life. "I ain't even know about the interview for real. He like talk about my like who I love or whatever."
"We all know how some people think LaVar is controlling over his sons' stuff, so I let them know that he doesn't do that with me, and I appreciate that," LiAngelo said. "He never really been on that," he said. He's 26 and focused on his course. "My pops not about to be, like, "What you doing?'"
In another twist, LiAngelo's new love interest, Rashida Nicole, was at the interview. She perked up noticeably when he talked about his ex-girlfriend. The tension between the women has been building for weeks, especially following a recent claim by Mudarris that Ball left her and their two children, LaNiyah Nicole and LaVelo Anthony, to be with Nicole.
If that wasn't messy enough, Mudarris claimed that Nicole is now pregnant. Nicole then fired back with charges of racism against Mudarris and countered that LiAngelo had already moved on by the time their breakup became public.
No matter how much the internet enjoys a relationship drama, LiAngelo Ball is not serving up the tea. He's holding his ground as a father and dismissing negativity. GELO isn't worried whether the public follows suit; he's letting his actions do the talking.
