Lil Gotit took brotherly love to the next level. Overcoming grief and heartbreak but spurred on by determination, the Atlanta rapper explains how he secured access to his late younger brother Lil Keed's vault of unreleased music, which they planned to unpack posthumously with their new album, "Fraternal."
Gotit described the surreal process of unlocking Keed's music in an exclusive interview with Atlanta's 96.1 The Beat. After Keed's untimely death in 2022, Gotit felt compelled to complete what his brother had begun. That mission brought him to Keed's hard drive, a trove of unreleased songs that only Keed could access.
I told my momma, "Hey, momma, come bring that boy [Lil Keed's] hard drive to me," Gotit says. But there was one big issue: the password. It wasn't written anywhere; it was only known to Keed.
Determined to hear his brother's music, Gotit drew on something more fundamental than technology: a bond only family can comprehend.
"I just thought in my head, 'Keed, he was simple with it, but make it hard at the same time,'" Gotit said. It took him two hours of trial and error, but he finally cracked it. "I tried something and boom! It opened right up. A million songs popped up. I said, 'Hold up, I got the vault. I got the real vault!'"
Getting into the vault wasn't just nostalgic for Gotit; it was all about timelessness. From the second he opened up the drive, he knew Keed was with him guiding the way. "It's like Keed's energy is "right here still with me," he said.
Within seconds, Gotit launched into the music, including his lyrics and tracks, featuring Prop and major collaborations with Tee Grizzley and Ty Dolla $ign. "Fraternal" is a 20-track album representing the last collaboration between the two brothers, assembling songs recorded between 2019 and 2022.
Aiming to avoid the stitched-because-it-was-there nature of so many posthumous albums, "Fraternal" is instead a project that Keed and Gotit had already begun to work on together. "We were in the studio recording every day," Gotit explained. "We really just vibed out. Much of the music was created by simply hanging out in the studio, playing off one another."
Fully embodying their collaborative push is the album's lead single, "CASH BROTHERS," which sets the tone for the rest of the album.
For Gotit, "This album is like a brotherly love wave," he said. "When I play it, even for other rappers, everyone has their favorite song. It's something real. Something Keed would've wanted.
Keed's death left a huge void, but Gotit won't let his brother's voice slip away. With "Fraternal" on the way, audiences can expect a passion-driven release, allowing fans to read between the lines of the unbreakable bond that two brothers have formed through chasing a love of music.
"Keed was just about the grind, the motivation, pushing yourself in the studio," Gotit said. "He'd always say, 'Keep going, keep recording." And now, thanks to Gotit's persistence, Keed's voice will live on one track at a time.
