Marcus Jordan, the 32-year-old son of NBA legend Michael Jordan, is getting better after a traumatic incident that could have turned disastrous. Jordan, now charged with drunken driving and cocaine possession, has formally filed for court approval to attend a substance abuse rehabilitation program after his arrest on February 4 in Orange County, Florida.
Jordan's arrest made news when police discovered him behind the wheel of a vehicle stuck on train tracks, intoxicated. The officers who responded to the scene observed that he had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol. The driver's car was stuck on the tracks for several minutes before they were contacted by authorities who prevented a terrible accident, with a train reported to be just 10 minutes away from the stalled car.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a bag with a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine. Jordan was charged with driving under the influence, possession of cocaine, and resisting arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges since then.
But in a recent motion filed by Jordan's legal counsel, they asked the court to grant him access to a substance abuse rehabilitation program. Jordan's lawyer noted that he admits to having an alcohol and drug addiction and is taking steps to seek a professional substance abuse program through treatment.
"Mr. Jordan recognizes that he needs assistance to deal with his alcohol/substance use challenges and is receptive to treatment," the legal filing said. The motion also emphasized that he could face his problems directly . It stated he would be a "good candidate" for the Pre-Trial Substance Abuse Education and Treatment Intervention Program.
"While Mr. Jordan recognizes the seriousness of the charges against him, he respectfully submits that he is an excellent candidate for the program based on his desire to live as a responsible, drug-free, productive member of the community," his lawyer wrote.
While Marcus Jordan has lived under the shadow of a sports icon, the son of Michael Jordan and his college sweeps have coined his own legacy in both fashion and the sneaker world. But this most recent episode has cast a spotlight on him and made him a target of an intense public dragging while he has been trying to get his life in order and steer his life to dry land.
So far, the court has not decided whether Jordan will be admitted to the rehabilitation program. If accepted into the program, it could prove a critical component of both his recovery and legal battle. Although his course within the justice system has yet to be determined, Jordan is taking steps to address his struggles and show that he wants to pursue a way to heal. For now, all eyes are on the court's ruling and whether Jordan's cutting remorse will lead to an opportunity to amend his life.
