Things are getting messier by the day regarding Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert, and Taylor is bringing it to court again. The multi-hyphenate singer and actress is pushing a judge to lock her ex-husband up, claiming that he’s spreading sealed court records regarding their divorce and cascading a shitstorm of misinformation that riled up the online community against her.
Taylor said that Shumpert’s alleged breach of the court’s confidentiality order resulted in “tabloids running wild” with headlines that “mischaracterized the substance” of their divorce settlement. The divorce set up Taylor’s winnings as a fortune of more than $10 million in high-end real estate, a sparkling array of luxury cars (a $300,000 Maybach, a $70,000 Mercedes Sprinter, and others) , and total ownership of her enterprises. Shumpert, by contrast, was reportedly ordered to pay $8,000 a month in child support in addition to paying private school tuition for their two daughters.
But Taylor was quick to blast these reports, explaining that the court’s ruling wasn’t a flamboyant win for her but a basic judicial splitting of the assets, many of which she had paid for herself. She pointed out that this specific Maybach was not a freebie but a self-purchased vehicle after Shumpert destroyed her Rolls-Royce and left it. She elaborated on the estates, saying that she got four properties but that Shumpert was not left empty-handed. He also got three properties, including a Miami condo that she had previously given him.
The parts of Taylor’s legal argument that may raise the most eyebrows are her assertions that the conveniently timed leaks coincidentally aligned with the release of Shumpert’s latest song. She avers that the whole scandal was a setup to promote his music at her expense. And if so, it’s working because people are talking.
She maintains that the leak of the details not only misled the public and distorted the truth but also placed her under a microscope of public scrutiny, causing a torrent of negative comments and online harassment to pour onto her social media. Now frustrated with the status quo, she’s calling for the consequences, to be honest.
In her most recent petition to the court, Taylor asks the judge to punish Shumpert for breaking the court order by serving a 20-day jail sentence and levies financial punishments against him for contempt of court. For Taylor, this isn’t about the legalities of it all but about boundaries and peace of mind.
