Wendy Williams, a former queen of daytime talk, is facing renewed scrutiny over the terms of her guardianship and living arrangements. But now her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, is pushing back against what her legal team describes as misleading and inaccurate portrayals of Wendy's present condition.
In a statement obtained by TMZ on March 11, an attorney for Morrissey responded to claims recently made by Wendy about her quality of life under guardianship. The lawyers explained that this was not an arrangement Morrissey cooked up himself; this was an order from a court after Wendy was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) in 2023. In September 2023, she was declared legally incapacitated, which allowed a guardianship put in place back in 2022 to continue through August 2024.
One of the most significant sticking points? Wendy's contact with her family. The talk show legend expressed frustration over who could visit her at the assisted living facility where she is now living. But Morrissey's lawyer argues Wendy isn't being isolated from family members. The statement also said Wendy had traveled to Florida two times to visit family, belying claims that she was being strictly restricted in her visitation.
The debate over Wendy's living conditions has also been a major flashpoint. Wendy paints an alarming picture, comparing her surroundings to a "prison," which causes concern among fans. Morrissey's legal team presents an entirely different reality, one packed with top-notch medical care, spa treatments, fitness centers, five-star meals, and outdoor decks with breathtaking views. But assuming these luxuries are as luxurious as claimed, this leads us to the question: Is this a matter of differing perspectives, or is there an underlying issue?
Wendy's guardianship battle has been a court fight, and it's just beginning. Her team tried to dissolve the arrangement last year, but the court denied it. Still, Wendy isn't giving up and will reportedly fight the guardianship again. Whether she succeeds is yet to be seen, but what's for sure is that she's resolute about regaining her life back.
According to reports, Wendy recently took a cognitive screening through an independent psychiatrist and knocked it out of the park. While the results wouldn't deprive her of her legal incapacity ruling, they could be key in her struggle for independence.
Morrissey's attorney also used the opportunity to address rumors around compensation, stating that the guardian has received only one payment of less than $30,000 and has otherwise diligently worked unpaid since 2022. That sounds like a reasonable sum, albeit the opposite of rumors that Morrissey is profiting from the deal.
This is at the core of a vast difference between perceptions. Wendy, her niece, and her independent caregivers appear to have a radically different view of her well-being than the legal team that's overseeing her guardianship. The tension is palpable as the week progresses, and tensions only escalate as the world reacts to the info wars we're seeing on X & Telegram and beyond.
