Kanye West is back on social media, and as ever, he is buzzing the internet. This time, his newest tirade found him showering Drake with praise while also taking shots at J. Cole. The strange combination of admiration and criticism when Ye took to Twitter to spit out a stream of tweets that had fans and the rap world talking.
In an unexpected move, Kanye shared a clip of Drake’s “Nokia” video and then gave an introspective look at their troubled friendship. As far as the 6 God went, Ye showed nothing but respect despite their public feuds throughout the past.
“I simultaneously hate Drake and am team Drake,” he tweeted. “Life is funny like that. That’s some weird shit where I feel closest to Drake outta anybody in rap.”
It didn’t take long for him to double down, offering a simple but audacious rejoiner: “Drake #1.”
Kanye’s love for Drake is inconsistent with anyone who has followed their long and convoluted history. One moment, they are working together; the next, they post subliminals and accusations. But if Ye’s recent tweets provide an accurate clue, he is back in Drake’s corner for now.
If Drake won Kanye’s approval, J. Cole lost it. His tone clearly showed that he wasn’t feeling Ye, as he didn’t elaborate on his issue with the Dreamville leader. The shots of Cole come months after J. Cole made a public apology to Kendrick Lamar for his past diss track, leading some fans to wonder whether Ye sees that as soft or inauthentic.
Social media, of course, exploded with reactions. Generally, some fans found Kanye’s praise for Drake uplifting, while others viewed it as something predictably Ye-esque. Meanwhile, J. Cole fans rode for their guy, questioning why Kanye even brought him up in the first place.
This isn’t Kanye’s first social media spree; it won’t be his last. From feuding with brands to former collaborators and fellow artists, Ye has a reputation for speaking his mind, a habit that has occasionally worked to his disadvantage.
His previous feuds with Drake are well documented, whether it be the matter of cryptic bars or full-blown diss tracks. But as history has proven, Ye’s feelings about Drake can also turn on a dime. One day, he’s an “industry plant,” and the next, he’s the best rapper alive.
Who knows if J. Cole will respond to Kanye’s comments? Cole is known for keeping it classy, and he likely has no desire to partake in Ye’s latest social media antics. When Kanye tweets, the world listens. And, love him or hate him, he always manages to keep the conversation rolling.
