Newark added another bright star to its constellation on a night of pride, cheers, and hometown love. The accomplished actor, director, and local hero Michael B. is now the first person in history to earn a star on the new Newark Walk of Fame.
The soirée was part of the premiere launch of Jordan's recent film, 'Sinners,' at the famed CityPlex 12, the same venue where Michael has repeatedly transformed Hollywood into the Brick City come that night. While he was unable to attend in person because he was filming, his presence was everywhere in the room, and the sentiment was unmistakable: Michael B. Jordan's legacy lives on in the fabric of his community.
"This is not just a star in the pavement but a bright, shining example of what you can build with belief, hard work, and the roots of the community," said Mayor Ras Baraka, who presented the tribute and an official city proclamation in Jordan's honor, along with Councilman Dupre "Doitall" Kelly and other local leaders.
The Newark Walk of Fame is an audacious new endeavor that will eventually honor more than 300 people whose work has contributed to culture, imagination, and community. That Michael B. Jordan's name is first in the lineup is no surprise. Jordan has always proudly owned his roots from his early days on The Wire to becoming an indomitable force in front of and behind the camera Creed, Black Panther, and now Sinners.
"Michael embodies the best of Newark," Councilman Kelly said. "He's represented our city's name in a major way globally and always finds ways to give back."
Jordan's affection for Newark is heartfelt. Whether hosting premieres at CityPlex 12 or supporting projects that illuminate untold stories, his commitment to the community is as strong as his off-screen presence. And now, that love has come full circle for good.
The cameras flashed as fans surrounded the newly unveiled star, and applause rang up and down the sidewalk. There was a sense in the air of celebration and inspiration. Young people looked on, wide-eyed, witnessing proof that someone from their streets could one day have their name etched in stone.
Even though Michael B. Jordan wasn't in person, Newark showed up for him like he's always shown up for them. As the city launches what is sure to be a long list of legendary names on its Walk of Fame, it's only appropriate that it begins with a story like his.
