Wendy Williams Fans Mobilize in Coast-to-Coast Protests Against 'Prison-Like' Guardianship

The fight for Wendy Williams is going to the streets. On April 1, demonstrations will occur in New York and Los Angeles as fans push to end the former late-night talk show host's court-ordered guardianship. Describing the legal arrangement as a "prison-like" confinement, demonstrators say they want to bring attention to what they see as an unjust system exercising control over Williams' life, finances, and medical care.

In recent months, fans have managed to use social media to get the ball rolling on their #FreeWendy campaign. According to the protest's organizers, supporters will gather in front of Coterie Hudson Yards, where Williams is said to be housed in a memory care facility, at 10 a.m. local time in New York. On the West Coast, protesters will gather at her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.

Williams, diagnosed in 2023 with frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia, is set to cheer her support from behind the walls of the assisted living center until 2 p.m. ET, organizers said. Her supporters say she has been misdiagnosed and is entirely able to manage her affairs and should, therefore, not be under such scrutiny.

The protests follow Williams' hospitalization following a wellness check by police on March 10. Officers arrived after she reportedly threw a handwritten note from her window that said, "Help! Wendy!!" Medics took her to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where she was evaluated psychologically.

Despite the scare, Williams has since gone on record saying that she aced a mental competency test and intends to use the results of the test to combat her guardianship in court. She has repeatedly criticized the arrangement, calling her living conditions lonely and isolating.

"I feel like I'm in prison," Williams said in past public comments, lamenting the constraints on her personal Freedom.

Williams' family is joining the effort, too. To assist her in gaining control of her life, family members have started a GoFundMe fundraiser to raise $50,000 for legal fees. The fundraiser is intended to challenge the guardianship in court and help Williams obtain the legal resources she needs to regain her independence.

Fans are still alarmed by the situation, and many wonder why the conservatorship is still in place after Williams stated that she is of sound mind. The court-approved arrangement, which has ruled over her finances and medical care since 2022, has faced an outcry from those who feel she is being denied her Freedom against her will.

While Wendy Williams is still under guardianship, the increasing protests mean her fans aren't going to take it sitting down. The #FreeWendy movement is getting attention, and with the public demanding justice for Wendy, many are watching the legal system to see if Williams will finally get the opportunity to take back her life. Wendy Williams' story is not over as her fans chant "Freedom" on both coasts.
